SEEDIG 7 Series

SEEtalk: Interview with a legend | 21 October 2021

Event description

Imagine if you could have a conversation with a person who created the Internet as we know it. The good news is that we are fortunate to live at the same time with people who are living legends. They are still active to devote the best of their knowledge to keep the global network secure and stable. But how often do we acknowledge their lifework and pay proper tribute to all the efforts they have undertaken for us to enjoy the benefits of information society?

We at SEEDIG have decided that we cannot miss a chance to talk to and learn from era-defining pioneers, thought leaders, groundbreakers and simply outstanding personalities who have pre-defined our present digital living in a not so distant past.

Continuing the last year’s tradition of running live conversations with people who are the driving change in the digital and tech industry, we will host the next SEEDIG 7 Series event as a SEEtalk with a remarkable woman who, with no exaggeration, is known as the Internet pioneer in our region. Our legend guest is Mirjana Tasić, currently an advisor with Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS).

On 21 October 2021, Mrs Tasić will share her unique story about how the Internet shaped her life and how her tremendous professional efforts and enthusiasm eventually shaped the Internet landscape in the region.

▫️Legend guest: Mirjana Tasić | Internet Pioneer, Advisor with Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS)

About Mirjana Tasić

Since 1988, Mrs Tasić has volunteered on different projects related to computer networking and the Internet. In the early ages of computer wide area networks, in the year 1988, she established a European Academic and Research Network – EARN node in Belgrade (then Yugoslavia, now Serbia). The EARN network was used for e-mail exchange in the academic community in Europe and North America. This was the first such node behind the Iron Curtain. After that first experience, she was incurably infected with the new freedom offered in the world of open networking.

Mrs Tasić was a member of the Technical Committee of Academic Network of Yugoslavia and actively participated in the introduction of the Internet in Serbia. Since 1992, she undertook necessary steps to get the administration of .yu Top Level DomainccTLD for Yugoslavia. She administered and maintained .yu TLD from 1994 until 2008.

Mrs Tasić was one of the organisers of the Serbian Internet Domain Names Registry RNIDS founding assembly meeting on 7 July 2006. She has volunteered as acting director of RNIDS until the organisation became capable of hiring a professional manager.

She planned and realised the transition from .yu TLD to .rs TLD and was a project manager in introducing .срб (.srb) IDN ccTLD for Serbia in Cyrillic script.

Among others, Mrs Tasić volunteered in the ICANN IDN variant TLD Program: Project (P2.1) - Procedure to Develop and Maintain the Label Generation Rules for the DNS Root Zone in Respect of IDNA Labels.

Mrs Tasić is the chairperson of the Latin generation Panel since the year 2016. The Latin GP Report is in public comment procedure driven by ICANN until 23 Nov 2021.
